ORIGINAL REVIEW: 5 stars -- Yeah, completely sucked in to this series... I think I know why people may have found it boring (or the first book or whatever)....it's b/c you actually get to read some happy time stuff...I LOVE that. It's not just conflict and craziness, but the occasional chapter of feel good love stuff. It was very satisfying.... Only thing that made me want to dock it a half star was the explanation for the loss of the light of the moon....that was terrible. Seriously. I don't know why it bothered me, but luckily it was only a tiny sub point on a page...it just stuck out. Was it just me?? OK, on to the 3rd -- woop woop!

REREAD: 4 stars -- I figured out that I am reading an old copy of the books, so I won't talk about any editing mistakes, since it wouldn't be accurate to the current available copy of the books. I really need to talk to Amazon about getting that fixed...grr. (besides which, it wasn't as bad as the first book. Still there, but more easily looked over)

So the loss of a star from the first read to this one was just that I found the characters could be a bit one dimensional or something....I'm not entirely sure what it is, but occasionally Sherry would get on my nerves. She was almost too good you know? I mean, I know that's her character, but it got to be a bit unbelievable at times. Maybe I'm just more cynical 4 years down the line??

But I LOVED that we got to see more POVs in this book, and I loved the developments with Cain and Lillian. I almost find them to be more interesting than Merrick and Sherry. There's a bit more grit to them or something.

And the obstacles and climaxes in this book! Hoowee!! It felt like I'd just started the book and we already had our first crazy encounter with Lighters and Markers, and then it just kept building in Part 1! Then we got a bit more of a break, but with some great developments, and then we got first the Cain/Billings/Lillian/Daniel craziness and then that ending!!! Definitely sucked in and just want to keep reading the rest of this series! I'm remembering more of why I was so enthralled in the first place, and even with my issues with characters I'm loving it!!

Uprising A Collide Novel Volume 2 Collide series edition by Shelly Crane Children eBooks Reviews

I debated getting this book because I wasn't very impressed with the first one. I decided to give the series another shot and I'm glad I did.

I admit, I was almost instantly filled with regret within the first few pages of this book. It started off more juvenile than the first book and picked up right where we left off as far as Merrick and Sherry's overly gushy relationship went. Luckily my regret did not stay with me and by the end of the book I was riveted...something that never happened with the first book. Although, I do have to say, it took awhile for me to really get into this book.

Some things that kept this book from 5 stars

I have to say that Sherry got on my nerves a little bit in this book. She was made into some kind of Saint figure and unfortunately a goody-two-shoes isn't the most interesting person to follow around. She had a much less prominent role in this book (although she was undoubtedly still the main character) which, as I mentioned, was refreshing, especially since she doesn't do much in this book. Most of the time she's left in their hideout while the others go and do stuff and that's fine with me since I loved the other characters but that might bother some serious Sherry fans. Anyhow, as far as her being TOO good goes...it got to be a litte too much for me when she wouldn't even hit someone during their trainings because she didn't like the way it made her feel. Come on. Oh, and the fact that Merrick (especially Merrick) and everyone else kept mentioning how cute and wonderful and sweet and perfect she was ever few pages or so (ok, I'm exaggerating a little) got pretty old. I get it...she's a nice girl...let's move on.

The authors wrote in too many characters. There really are too many side characters in this book for the author to keep track of. Many characters are mentioned a few times and then never mentioned again. Fine in any other book EXCEPT one where they're all confined in a tiny little underground hideout where supposedly they would all run into each other many times a day. I love the characters the author fleshed out for us in this story but the fact that she wrote in the side characters and then never mentioned them again kind of took away from the story more than it added. Also, she killed off a couple of the side characters which, for me, made it glaringly obvious that there were too many characters because I coudn't even recall who they were and so their deaths had no significance for me whatsoever. Just random people. I don't consider this much of a spoiler since, like I said, they have no significance to the story.

The lack of an editor seems to be even more apparent in this book than the last and there were sentences in this book that I just had to chalk up as lost because I couldn't decipher them. Those were few and far between but they did exist. Luckily this book had a fast-paced storyline that helped take away from the grammar issues...her last book did not have such a storyline.

Now for the good!!

One of my major issues with the first book was that nothing serious ever really happened to any of them. That changes in this book. They're still in hiding but a lot more goes on and when something happens it's a lot more interesting and compelling than anything that happened in the first book. The fact that the author started dividing up the chapters between various viewpoints (not just Sherry and Merrick) made it possible for more adventures and gave a very welcome break from the Sherry/Merrick love-fest. I didn't really find the character changing hard to keep up with as the author clearly states who the person is in the title of each chapter. It was really refreshing to have new perspectives play such a large role since I felt like I pretty much had all I could take from Sherry/Merrick from the first book. This book is has much more action than the first book and while I admit to skipping many pages of Sherry-Merrick interactions, there were actually parts of the book that had me hooked.

The plot twists are interesting and the solutions these characters find are believable. In her first book I found myself thinking 'how convenient' a lot when things just happened to work out for the characters. I didn't have that in this book. Well...ok...maybe once or twice, but that's competely insignificant compared to my previous experience. The author really stepped up her game as far as plot goes with this one.

We have a new power couple in this book and they're kind of awesome. ) Their relationship seems more real than Sherry and Merrick's (too perfect...) and they're just more entertaining. It really helps this series out a lot...like a breath of fresh air.

Anyhow...new romances, lots of action and plot twists...much, MUCH better than Collide and I'm glad I bought this.

Oh...I should also note that from my review it probably sounds like I hate Sherry + Merrick. I don't...I like that they're together, they work together and I DO like their relationship. It's just that the first book basically revolved around their relationship so much that, for me, it's just been hashed out to death. This book needed to put their relationship in the background instead of the forefront and it did. )
As we move on to book two in the Collide series we start to learn more about the Keepers and the Lighters. Merrick and Sherry are getting a long great until Piper returns and starts trouble again. She has help causing Merrick to see a vision a Sherry cheating on him with Cain. They have a argument and it gets really bad and Sherry could tell something was wrong but what it was she was not sure. Then Merrick woke up and he is his normal self and Sherry ask if he has any idea what has happen. They figure it out so Piper and he special are put into a different are.

It brought tears to my eyes when Lily asked if she could still call Merrick "daddy" and he said yes. Then she looks to Sherry and asked if she could call her "mother", Sherry held the tears back and said you can call me "mommy". For someone who can never have kids do to problem having a child call you mommy will bring tears to your eyes in a heart beat. I have see it happen with a very close friend of mine. So when I read this part it took me back to that day and I had to stop reading for a while because I was crying so hard.

Then when Cain was late getting home and Lillian freaks out got to Merrick and Sherry and tells them, but decides she can wait until an hour and a half and goes out on her own to save him. That was really
brave and scary at the same time.

Then to have Lillian taken by a Lighter thinking she is going to be killed and her talking to him and finding out his name was Daniel. I totally didn't see that coming.

I was so glad that Cain was able to move on to find someone that needed to be loved by him and not be a second. When he seen Lillian and they ended up getting along so well.

I really hope that they are going to she Sherry back and I love how Daniel was the Lighter in the holding cell with her and brought her stuff.
