I really liked the majority of the book. It was very descriptive and the characters were well developed. However, it wrapped up much to quickly for me, and left me wanting more. I desired to know more details about why they made certain choices as well as specific feelings therein. Everything I had enjoyed in the first 9/10ths of the book seemed missing at the ending. Some of the transitions in the chapters from one character focus to another did not seem to have significant breaks. Additionally, the move from one season to another was at times shocking. I expected either space, an asterisk, tilde or something to break the paragraphs in some way. Although, I did read it in digital form so this may not be the case in the hard copy.
In the last chapter, just paragraphs from the end, I felt a huge whack to my chest. "Sarah and her sons looked east, toward the snow-capped Rocky Mountains that stood majestic and blue in the soft spring light." What? EAST? If anyone has ever truly been on Colorado's Front Range they know that the mountains are always to the west. I chose this book to read because I live in CO near the setting. Needless to say I was disappointed by that statement.
Overall, it left me wanting. I will choose to read the second in the series though.

I love this book! The characters are lively and well developed, the setting is beautifully created, and the storyline is rich with action. The details are true and realistic and bring the reader eye to eye and nose to nose with places and people, quickly creating a vested interest in this heart warming Colorado community. I am impressed with historical information, timless relevance of themes addressed, and the wholesome yet steamy romance tempered with self respect, respect for others, and respect for morality in relationships.
I am happy to have found Colorado Promises Charlene Whitman has raised the bar for historical romances to a level which makes her books enjoyable on any number of levels, be it a quick read between chores or a leisurely read to ponder, this read appeales to the insightful, thoughtful audience.
When I read the author's bio note, I was not surprised to learn that she majored in English in college as her style is full, rich, and easy to read yet succinct. Nothing lost but all gained in this accurate, well-written historical romance! I will be looking forward to each new book in this series!
I found this book mildly enjoyable. The trouble for me was pacing. I found the setting descriptions to be overdone and heavy-handed, for my taste. Also, I am an internal monologue character development fan, but for me there were too many needless inner thoughts portrayed. I felt they could have been cut by at least 30% to keep things moving without sacrificing character development. I felt frustrated with the main character as well. Honestly just do something already. It seemed the timeline of events was stretched out needlessly, especially once certain facts had been established. It drives me crazy when the only reason the plot isn't moving forward is because the character is too meek/cowardly (without true cause) to open her mouth and speak up. It felt like this book took too long to get to the romantic climax and then used cowardice to delay the inevitable conclusion - a selfish cowardice that worried about hurting one person's feelings while completely neglecting another's. I could almost hear her whine, "but he'll be mad at me." Right. Because telling him later is going to make it so much less painful. Selfish. And even the conclusion was filled with so many unimportant details that I put the book down with only 4 pages to go and didn't pick it up again for another 24hrs. And only then because I hate leaving things unfinished.
I realize it could sound like I hated this book by my review thus far, but I honestly didn't. It had some very good qualities. The historical details were right on from what I know, and the behavior and beliefs of the characters were era accurate as well. I liked the hero better than the heroine. And aside from my irritation with regain character's choices as stated above, I did find the characters interesting, well developed, and entertaining. I particularly liked the sections where things were happening. I felt they were well-written and compelling.
I WOULD read this author at least one more time as I do see promise in her talent and her sincere effort shows in the historical accuracy. That is no easy feat. I am certain this author has spent countless hours studying her history and probably only got to show 5% of what she learned in the preparation for this novel. That's how it goes with this genre.
I chose the book after reading about the storyline. Sounded good. Sadly once into reading it, I was disappointed in how juvenile the story was written. For example, it goes into too much repetitive detail. Heroine gushes over grown playmate as an adolescent would. She likes how handsome Randall has become and she wants to make him love her, but then goes into thinking things like touching and etc. every time she thinks of him. But then hold on, she thinks and feels the same things after meeting the hero.
Also we are to believe that in a hailstorm, shelter was not found quickly. Have you ever felt hail hit your body? And when locusts hit, horses were OK, everyone got inside with no problem. Just a small thing about the dog. The dog loves Lucas and hags with Lucas but goes off with the two young brothers and never even inspects or goes near our heroine. I'm a dog lover. I know this would not happen. Heroine is worried about hero who went to help friends even though a snowstorm had caused them to seek shelter, so she who is a stranger to the country leaves to make sure hero is Ok. And yep, she made it to where she wanted to be. No trouble for her through snow and unfamiliar country. There are many other hard to believe things that you can read and discover on your own.
I will not say don't buy this book, but be aware it's worth about 99 cents.
