A year of illness, a near-miss with cancer, and major surgery prompted me to question what I believed about death, dying, and the after-life. I had noticed references to this book by Jennifer Worth, author of the CALL THE MIDWIFE series, and I was already impressed with her compassion, faith, and sensible approach to suffering. At this point, the book is out of print, but I was able to obtain a copy from a used book site. Amazon will probably get it to you faster and cheaper.
Worth's lesser known book is not as evenly written as her nursing memoirs. Some passages soar and others drag. She clearly points out that reviving people with collapsing health again and again has a down side. She opposes euthanasia, but she makes a good case for letting nature take its course when a person is suffering and has no quality of life. For me, all of this was beside the point. I wanted to understand death.
The passages where she tells anecdotes about those she has been with through their death are very well written and engaging to a person who is facing her own mortality way up close. Worth helped lessen my fear and take a more realistic look at death.
This is a "portmanteau" book. Worth tries to accomplish two separate things with the book, enclosing two separate purposes within one container, and that is a weakness. On the one hand, she is arguing against mandatory resuscitation of life when a person is suffering in extremity. On the other, she is explaining what death is, the characteristics she could observe about death, and why it is not to be feared, particularly by those who have lived a full life, or those who have faith in God.
I consider the book to be an answer to prayer when I was deeply shaken. If you find yourself where I have been, I highly recommend it, but get ready to do some skimming to get to the sections you want to read. Jennifer Worth, in my opinion, was "the real thing" in a world of commercialized Christianity. She worked on behalf of others, loved her family, prayed for unpleasant people she encountered, and had that full life. She lived it well. In spite of some weaknesses, the book was of great benefit to me.

An insightful look at the way death is treated in our modern society. Ironically, Jennifer Worth was herself diagnosed with terminal cancer and died fairly soon after the publication of this book. As a Christian, she faced it with no fear.
The book is filled with many anecdotal stories from her past nursing career and a look at what goes on in modern hospitals today. With the onset of extreme measures and the rise of technology, death is now seen as the enemy and patients often suffer greatly, from not being allowed to die. As a retired nurse, I could relate to her observations. I recommend this highly.
This is one of the most beautiful books I've read in recent years. Although the subject matter is the sort that could have led to a morbid and depressing book, this book is written with such compassion, humor and matter-of-factness that it's neither of those things. In fact, it made me fear death less, and made me want to talk about it more openly with others. Within just a couple of weeks of finishing this book, my grandfather died. This book has helped me in the healing process. I am able to see his death as a peaceful, necessary transition and a part of being human - rather than a scary, "icky" thing that's taboo to talk about. I'm a huge fan of the Call the Midwife show but had never read any of Jennifer Worth's books - this book makes me want to read everything else she's written. She writes in such an approachable way about a really difficult topic, and makes the reader feel as though they're having a conversation with a good friend.
This is a much darker book than the "Call the Midwife" trilogy by the author. Here, the author muses over the strides that the medical profession has made in being to hold death at bay. With it, however, comes the issues of medical ethics and what truly may be in the best interests of the patient.
Many of these medical innovations have caused us to view death differently. It is no longer quite such an intimate, familial experience, as less people seem to die at home. It is much more clinical and removed from everyday experience, touching us, the Liverpool by, much more tangentially. Certainly, the author poses issues that create much food for thought and discussion.
It is interesting to note that the author wrote this book in the waning years of her own life, as she died of cancer shortly after completing the book, making the thoughts and ideas contained therein that much more poignant. I applaud her for writing a book that brings to light some of the issues surrounding death in modern society.
An incredible look at the historical trends of health care from the perspective of a hospice nurse. Jennifer Worth, in her previous books took us on a journey of her early career as a mid-wife in the East End of London and how she and her colleagues helped to bring new life into the world. In the Midst of Life she brings us along on her career change into the world of hospice and shows us with exquisite detail how modern medicine has helped us to live longer, but not necessarily better, and in many cases has simply prolonged suffering. In the Midst of Life is also about death which is inseparable from life but which we tend to deny, and this is the underlying message of the book, that there can be blessing in embracing the whole of life and not just the parts we like.
My mother has terminal cancer and I started reading this book with some trepidation. Fearful that it would be too much to handle. However, Jennifer Worth writes exactly what I believe to be true about death and dying and the modern way of dealing (or not dealing) with it. Sure, it made me cry, but it also made me laugh and realize that while I know I will miss my mother when she is gone, death is a part of life that we all share and facing it with dignity and honesty and love for each other is paramount.
