This first book in the series is both outrageously funny and addictive. Jessica and her friends are very realistically written and will keep you in both suspense and rolling on the floor with laughter! I love how the descriptions of the valley and the cities in it, bring the area to life. The writing is smooth flowing and very descriptive. I loved how intricate the murder plot was. It kept your attention and didn't let go until the final page. I highly recommend this book and series to anyone who loves a fascinating adventure, wild and wacky characters and nonstop action. Suitable for both mystery and cozy mystery fans!

I enjoyed reading this story of two friends going through a very tough time. Jessie's husband was the love of her life until she caught him in their bed with a blonde.
She was wealthy and addicted to shopping. She did not know how to live after that. She could not bring herself to sign the divorce papers and even dreamed of making love to him again.
She returned to her desert childhood home where her Mexican nanny spoilt her rotten.
Her friend Laura was very happily married but her husband was not telling her of his financial difficulties. She felt a chasm developing between them. Stupidly and uncharacteristically, she spent a night with a waiter called Eric. When she returned at 6am the next morning, she found her husband Roger brutally murdered. Laura was a prime suspect so she phoned Jessie in a panic because she was a lawyer and begged her to defend her. A nightmarish week followed. I thouggt Jessie was a spoilt rich girl, but she managed to fight for the truth and for her friends. Right at the end the surprise arrival of Jim, Jessie's husband, opens the way for a follow-up. I found it to be a very absorbing story and recommend it. The whole series might be great too.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by this series. I read another story by the author in an anthology with some of the same characters, & while I enjoyed it, it was a little too young for my regular reading. I was afraid Jessica Huntington & her “cat pack” would act like a bunch of older teens. Instead, Jessica is a strong female lead with a great relationship with her “St Bernadette” to help her through the rough spots. Figuring out a humiliating divorce. A career that took a sharp detour, the devastating results of too many fertility treatments without a viable pregnancy on her body, she now also is plunged into investigating a murder. Even the rich & privileged Jessica has real-life problems that many women face, which she is working through. I felt empathy for her - a fictional character!— which shows how well-written she is. Read to story, enjoy the mystery, make a new friend in Jessica.
All of Anna Celeste Burke books seem to be be available on kindle unlimited, alhtough think at first came across her in one of the Happy Homicides anthologies she is in. Also after reading a freebie or something as well, went and bought every book out, pre-ordered #4 out now amd have pre-ordered #5 now.There are blurbs at the start of every book if you want to know about characters, plots and all that. My rating is 5 and 5, everthing else is rather up to the personal tastes of each reader. Below is a list of her series, with titles, in order. Try them on ku or buy them in sets or individually as I did; ku is nice, but keeping certain books forever is better.

I found this to be an entertaining mystery. I was guessing incorrectly who did what right up to the end. Even though I'm not a woman, I liked the characters (female protagonist, and her best friend, and her housekeeper. There were some men, but they were secondary and/or dead). So, if you like the typical cozy mystery where the heroine finds clues & killer before the police, beats up on crooks twice her bulk, etc. you should like this. (At least she throws up at a bloody crime scene like a normal person) I don't read fiction because it's believable, I read to be entertained.

Things I personally couldn't care less about Protagonist is rich beyond measure and talks about and purchases overpriced designer clothes, purses, etc. Poor thing has a credit card with a minimum(not max, min) spend of $250,000 per year. But that didn't stop me from generally liking the story and the character. She does have a good heart and keeps being sorry she used to be such a spoiled princess, and is trying to help her friend.
